可以幫我解答一個國中英文考卷的問題嗎? 謝謝各位先進。

遇到一個國中的考卷，選擇題型的考試卷，解答說是 ( C ) 。
想請各位先進幫忙解說答案為什麼是 ( C ) 那樣的答案 ?

因為過去的學習經驗是 ( D ) It's one hundred dollars. 才是正確的答案。

感到很困惑，網路上找很久，沒辦法找到直接的解說。

所以只好請各位先進幫忙解說，謝謝。

題目如下 :

Rita : Banana, please. How much is the total?

選項有四個，提供的答案是 ( C ) It's one hundred.

( A ) They're are one hundred.

( B ) They're are one hundred dollars.

( C ) It's one hundred.

( D ) It's one hundred dollars. ( 謝謝指教，已經更正拼錯的單字。)

看來我美國同事也不知道。

這種考題有點像日本人或者中國人出的考題。可能不曉得看到什麼文法書，然後出一個這種考題。

跟 How much is this ? 不一樣。

在想是不是特殊的使用方式，或者說回答方式，因為用 is the total ?

A：A total of 後接複數名詞，而該複數名詞是句子的主詞，換言之，a total of 接複數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 are 或 were)，而 the total of 也是接複數名詞，但句子的主詞卻是 the total，而不是該複數名詞，所以 the total of 接單數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 is 或 was)。兩者的語意並無差異且皆可用 in total, in all, all told 等同義的片語來替換。例如：

A total of thirty days were spent on the trip.
= The total of thirty days was spent on the trip.
= In total, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= In all, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= All told, thirty days were spent on the trip. (這趟旅行總共花了三十天)
顯然地，a total of 和 the total of 的文法概念與 a number of 和 the number of 如出一轍。儘管一些文法學者認為 a total of 是贅字，但它卻可用來避免句子的開頭使用數字。例如：

A total of 432 people applied for the three jobs. (總共有 432 人申請這三份工作)
Total 這個字本身可當動詞、形容詞和名詞用。當動詞用時，total 意為「總計為；總共為；共達」，如 His earnings from car racing now total over three million dollars. 當名詞用的 total 可與 combined, cumulative, estimated, final, grand, overall, sum 以及 high, huge, large, low, small 等形容詞連用，如 His three goals give him a grand total of 30 for the season. (他的三次進球使他本賽季的進球總數達到 30 個)；The sum total of my knowledge of astrology is not impressive. (我對占星學的知識乏善可陳)。然而，sum total 的用法也有爭議，大多數文法學者都認為 total 在這個片語中是贅字，違反英文簡潔的原則。

猜測可能下面這樣的思考方式。

作過考慮跟網路上找 total 的用法以後，可能是 is the total? 的詞彙用法關係。

" 總共( 數 )是多少 " ，所以回答 one hundred ，看作單數 ( 複合名詞，但是看作單數的複合名詞。) ;
如果用 one hundred dollars ，可能被認為是複數名詞，但跟 the total 看作單數主詞是前後不符合的。
