「魚與熊掌不可兼得」這句諺語是出自孟子【魚我所欲也】。
它的本意並不是兩個東西無法兼得，而是強調當無法同時擁有時，要懂得取捨。
另一外還有，好的東西不要擁有過多，不然就無法體現出其真正的價值了。
「魚與熊掌不可得兼」的英文翻譯其實不只一種：
You cannot sell the cow and drink the milk.
You can’t have your cake and eat it (too).
You can't have it both ways.
