Why should we spend so much time to learn a language not much useful in our daily life? Some said they might communicate with people from abroad or get useful information if they understand English. The truth is, yes, but only in so far as you really need to contact these foreigners so much often and cannot work things out without English. Yet, most of time, say, in 99% of time you won't need to understand another (be he a foreigner or whosoever) by speaking or writing fluent English. If you really need to use it to get your job done, you could go to google translation, then you got what you need easily. You can even input a long paragraph and get the roughly understandable translation in a second. There is always ways to cope with the language barriers. Remember, English is the lingua franca only because the Anglo-Saxon hegemony in the world, not because it is truly valuable by nature. I just wonder how many Chinese-speaking people can master their own language and learn about it as much motivated as they do for English? if you can't even make sense of your own language, how can you expect to master another foreign language? Most of the learners are putting the cart before the horses, to say the truth.

Don't waste so much time in English learning. Two-third of Japanese Nobel award winners can neither speak nor write good English. A great portion of the best writers in the world don't write in English. Without English, you can still be great. The point lies in something else, not in English alone. Are you an able speaker of your own language? Do you write eligible Chinese? I think that counts for your career, not English!

我會讀，也會寫英文，因為我花了四十年時間，而且我完全自學，但是我想告訴你，不學一點也沒關係，不會英文不會死，日子一樣過得好得很。但是不學好中文你可能真的會很慘，把學英文當成頭等大事來辦的教育，是世界上最蠢的教育，台灣就是。

只用一次不兩次好了

確實，曾看過有小孩英文說得很溜，中文却講得支支吾吾，結果和同學完全無法互動。不過學英文真的很重要，至少有時候可以找到用中文找不到的資訊。

過程比結果更重要，樓主的精神值得拍手鼓勵。講英文或其他外語的口音受到自己母語的影響很大，有時實在難以避免，就別太在意了。

我的老師Perelman說，People never trust you only because of your solid argument or anything alike, but of certain presupposed world view or shared values. So, if someone had a social circle and life style so much different from yours, he just won't listen to you anyway. 一般庸人總是跟著世俗的意見走，尤其他們身邊的人的意見，其實就是他的意見。你舉一百個理由說上補習班學英文沒屁用，不必把英文看那麼重，都是沒有用的，他們在乎一個公允的道理嗎?不在乎，只要身邊人都這樣做，那就是理由。很好，請繼續，勺子們。
