However, after replacing the mechatronic unit, problems still persisted with the transmission and further investigation found that the synthetic oil used was not suitable. An official statement from Volkswagen explained that ‘electric malfunctions could occur in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used. This applies in particular if the vehicle is subject to a hot and humid climate, coupled with a high proportion of stop-and-go driving’. The solution was a simple one – switching to mineral-based oil which has eliminated the problem.
