Silicon Power S03 2.5 2TB
So this model now is based on ST2000LM007-1R8174 SATA harddrive, which is 7mm thick and uses SMR recording technology.
(before Summer 2016 they had used to put ST2000LM003 drives inside this model of the external drive, which were 9 mm thick and used PMR recording).
It is usable as a bulk cold storage archival drive, provided small random writes are minimised.
In order to get a satisfactory performance on a windows PC, do the following:
1. After connecting it to the PC, On windows, Right click on computer -> manage -> device manager -> disks -> Seagate Expansion -> Policies tab -> set to better performance, + enable write caching & disable buffer flushing. (Also it is applicable to some USB flash/SSD disks).
2. After receiving the new disk, before filling with data, quick format this drive with 64KB clusters (NTFS filesystem), For linux user, do not use ext3/4! (unless using packed metadata option, google: SMR drives in linux), this is Drive Managed SMR, so could become very slow on writes (if used with stock ext3 FS) and does not like distributed FS metadata. For mac - it should be OK with HFS, provided 64KB blocksize is used.
3. Enable turbo USB (unless you are on win10 or have UASP usb3.0 controller) - set minimum USB BOTP transfer size to 1MB-2MB. Helps for usb2.0 speeds too :-)
4. When filling the drive with data, expect the writing speed to average at ~30MB/s after first 20GB, and do not be worried about clicks, since it has ~20GB of PMR cache, and once that is full or drive is idle, it has to move that data onto SMR region.
5. Once done with data copy, leave the drive on while it makes clicking sounds (so it can move all the data from PMR region to SMR section). Once the clicks had stopped, you can unmount and then safelly remove it. Unlike the previous PMR version, it does not spin down when idle for long time, so it is better not to leave it on constantly.
If this advice is followed, it would be fast for the first 20GB, next time it is used.
6. Do not use it for any dynamic database application or raid0, raid5 or raid6! (it can be sort of ok for soft RAID1, linear or JBOD backup archive)! Also make sure no swap file resides on it!
Also do not use it as working drive for P2P downloads, since it is not really designed for random writes. But it is ok with large random reads, so ok to be used as a storage for completed downloads (enable completeion move).
