I own a 2017 GSF now but I just rented a 2018 M4 (Competition)

Believe it or not. Actually my previous 2007 G35S was also very good. When it was 4 year old, I put a KW V3 suspension on it. Comparing my current GSF with Ohlins, I think G35S with KW also provided similar confidence and sharpness.

Of course GSF with Ohlins is better than G35S with KW but NOT by much... But, Ohlins is more comfortable.

Finally I get the similar feel as my previous G35S/KW back on my GSF which is even one level better than Bilstein PSS10 from my son's G35S!!!

Time passed so fast...

My GSF is already 3 year old now. So I flushed the brake fluid last Sunday. I also checked the GSF factory repair manual to make sure everything I did was correct... Actually the whole task was quite easy and as easy as my Nissans.

Of course Brembo F6/R4 are HUGE!!! So I had to take a bit longer time to flush the whole brake fluid. In addition for my Nissans I only needed 0.6 liter brake fluid but for my GSF I had to use 1.2 liter...

Be honest. I was really concerned about those huge and heavy performance wheels and tires from my GSF (I'm old now...).

However, when I removed them I found they were actually not so heavy and lighter than those from my wife's M35X.

I think those performance wheels from my GSF are really good. But, how come my wife's M feels more peppy most of the time no mention M also has AWD which has more power power-train loss ??? No wonder why my wife's M drank so much more gas than my GSF!!!

In US I have to learn how to fix punctures by myself...

Why? Because if I take my GSF to any repair shop for fixing a puncture, I have to wait at least ONE HOUR... (but it usually takes less than 10 minutes in Taiwan!!!)

I cannot wait that long for only a small puncture!!!

OK. I have driven my GSF with new Ohlins suspension for one week now.

Now I would like to give some additional thoughts from it...

This is very sure. Ohlins is much more comfortable than KW and Bilstein.

Why is Ohlins more comfortable and also keeps the sporty ride? In my opinion, KW and Ohlins are actually quite different in their designs. They both use much stiffer springs but each of them uses different approach to damp those much stiff springs.

I think KW/Bilstien has much stiffer compression damping. The higher compression damping increases road and driving feel but also reduce some ride comfort. That's why I believe KW/Bilstein is more hardcore than Ohlins. Higher compression rate also reduces some work load for dampers when rebound.

But, Ohlins has excellent rebound damping which is better than KW and much better than Bilstein. Therefore Ohlins can provide comfortable and very stable sporty ride AT THE SAME TIME.

Maybe Ohlins is not as sporty as KW/Bilstein but the damping technology from Ohlins are better than KW, much better than Bilstein and at a different level...

That's why Ohlins is more expensive than KW and KW is more expensive than Bilstein...

Actually Ohlins usually adopts springs which are a little higher spring rates than KW/Bilstein.

Why? Since Ohlins has less compression damping, it needs more stiff springs to keep a similar good driving feel. So stiffer spring and more compression travel(due to less compression damping) when hitting a bump means rebound energy will be TREMENDOUS after a bump!!! To keep that very stable ride Ohlins must provide extremely good rebound damping to absorb that rebound energy after a bump...

Ohlins has excellent rebound damping but it is also smart enough to release rebound damping when needed... That's DFV comes into play!!! (To prevent the third impact...)

The first impact is hitting a bump with less impact (thanks to less compression rate)
The second impact is stiffer spring rebound with very composed ride when tires are still on bumps (thanks to excellent rebound damping)
The third impact is also reduced when the bump is passed completely (thanks to DFV)

I think Ohlins is really GOOD on damping...

My new Ohlins suspension has been installed on my GSF for over 2 weeks now. Guess what? It becomes more and more comfortable...

I would say 30% of the time the new Ohlins is more comfortable(and more stable) than OEM, 50% of the time the Ohlins is as comfortable as OEM(but more stable) and only 20% of the time OEM is more comfortable than the new Ohlins when the road becomes really rough!!!

But, I gain more immediate response from that much stiffer Swift springs which can let me feel more confident especially on mountain roads. In addition the new Ohlins also provides tighter steering feel on highway.

Like I said before I still think KW is more sporty than Ohlins. However Ohlins still can provide at least 90% of KW sporty feel but 100% more comfortable and 30% more stable than KW!!!

I think Ohlins is a better choice for streets. In my opinion the dampers designed for streets are more complicated than for tracks because the road conditions on streets could be very DIFFERENT...
