2019 Itzulia Basque Country - Tour of the Basque Country

Stage 1 ( ITT ) ：

Zumarraga > Zumarraga ( 11.3 km )

● Start time : 2019.04.08 (一) 2 : 15 pm (當地時間)

● Profile ：

Not your average race against the clock, this one has a horrible climb for the riders to tackle.
The first 4km rises at around 1%, before a short descent into the climb.
The hill is 2.5km at 9%, which is a proper test on a TT bike.
It gives the climbers a brilliant chance of competing against the power men and is quickly followed by a technical descent to the finishing line.
This is a tricky start to the race.

If you cast your mind back to 2015, this was the final climb in stage 3.
That day, Rodriguez, Quintana and Henao escaped the peloton, with the Spaniard winning the sprint.
The climb exploded the race, it is very difficult.

A rare stage for the sprinters, but it does include a little bit of gravel road, which will make the peloton a little nervous.
The finish isn’t flat either, we’re talking 660m at 6.7%.

This stage is going to cause havoc.
The organisers have managed to find some white road sections for the peloton to travel on, these sections are incredibly narrow, that’s going to be the main issue.
The entrance to the sections will mean that the peloton will do a full sprint lead out, which will stretch the elastic. Once onto the section, there is every chance of the elastic snapping and catching out some of the GC riders.

We have six sectors: 200m, 700m, 1800m, 400m, 800m and 900m.
We’re not talking Strade Bianche, but life won’t be easy, and this is a stage that will concern many riders.
The most difficult sector is the longest one, as it’s also uphill, averaging 6.4%.
I can’t stress the importance of positioning, the entrance to the sectors is almost a joke, I couldn’t quite believe it myself.

The last 1.3km rises at 5%, but the final 570m is at 8.4%.
This is a tricky little finish for the riders, it’s too hard for the sprinters, just as well none of them are actually here!
This is a great finale for the puncheurs, but timing the launch of the sprint will be very important.
Going long will be very difficult, think back to Matthews’ win in Catalunya, ideally you would wait for the final 100m.

The winner of Strade Bianche will have no problem with the white roads, and he’ll love the finish. QuickStep have the team needed to put him into a good position for the final kilometre, then it’s over to him. Given his form, he has to start the stage as the big favourite.

--- What the picture doesn’t show is a big turn with just over 4km to go. The peloton move from a wide road, to a narrow one.This is likely to be a pinch point and positioning is very important.
The long road that takes them to 2km to go is quite narrow and moving up the bunch will be very difficulty.
Once they turn and head towards the finishing line, the road gets a little wider for the sprint.

--- Maximilian Schachmann (BORA - hansgrohe) 先是靠自己在第一站的 ITT 拿到第 1 名，穿上了領騎黃衫，但是與 GC 第 2 名～第 5 名只有 9 ～ 16 秒的微小差距，一不小心就會被翻盤。

--- 第二站， Maximilian Schachmann 以第 6 名 (+ 1 秒) 的成績，成功保住了領騎黃衫，
與 GC 第 2 名～第 4 名的差距仍然只有 5 ～ 13 秒，尤其 GC 第 2 名 Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick Step) (第二站第 1 名) 來勢洶洶，威脅最大。
這一站，原本 GC 第 5 名 (+ 16 秒) 的 Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) 在終點前約 16 km 的礫石路段發生爆胎，這一耽擱，使得原本順利處在主集團內的 Yates，最後以第 51 名 ( + 1 分 12 秒 ) 進終點，以致他第二站後的 GC 排名掉到了第 36 名 (+ 1 分 31 秒)，退出了 GC 競爭的行列。
老天爺幫 Schachmann 除去了一位強力的 GC 競爭者，這是天助。

--- 第三站，在終點前約 6 km 的一次高速度之下的摔車事故，幫 Maximilian Schachmann 除去了最強力的 GC 競爭者 Julian Alaphilippe ，由於傷勢不輕 (外傷)，經過現場醫療人員處置之後，Alaphilippe 才重新上車騎回終點 ( 第 151 名 / + 12 分 9 秒 )。這一下，Alaphilippe 在第三站後的 GC 排名掉到了第 77 名 ( + 12 分 24 秒 )，黯然退出了 GC 競爭的行列。 ( 第四站 DNS，退出比賽了。)
還不僅於此，同樣的一件摔車事故，還幫 Schachmann 同時除去了另外三位有力的 GC 競爭者：
1. Michał Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) ( 第三站第 150 名 / + 9 分 28 秒 ) ( GC 排名從第 3 名 / + 10 秒，掉到第 70 名 / + 9 分 48 秒) ( 第四站 DNF，退出比賽了。)
2. Enric Mas (Deceuninck - Quick Step) ( 第三站第 90 名 / + 1 分 43 秒 ) ( GC 排名從第 7 名 / + 28 秒，掉到第 34 名 / + 2 分 21 秒)
3. Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) ( 第三站第 139 名 / + 5 分 46 秒 ) ( GC 排名從第 11 名 / + 42 秒，掉到第 62 名 / + 6 分 38 秒)
至此， Schachmann 在這場比賽最有威脅的幾位 GC 競爭對手 (Julian Alaphilippe、Michał Kwiatkowski、Adam Yates) 都出局了，真是天助 Schachmann 也。
不過， Schachmann 自己的表現也沒有漏氣，在第三站的上坡終點衝刺中以明顯的差距勝出，再拿到一個單站第 1 名，這讓他的領騎黃衫穿得更穩了。在摔車事故讓原本分別只以 5 秒、10 秒的差距緊追在後的 Julian Alaphilippe 與 Michał Kwiatkowski 完全退出 GC 競爭的行列之後， Schachmann 在第三站後的 GC 排名上與第 2 名 ( Ion Izagirre / Astana Pro Team ) 的差距來到比較不那麼緊繃的 33 秒。
剩餘的三站比賽， BORA - hansgrohe 的第一要務就是好好保護他們的黃衫隊友 Maximilian Schachmann ，確保他能夠"遠離麻煩" (機械故障、摔車...)。

This stage has four mountain passes and two sprints :
- Las Campas of 3rd category at Km 55.9 : Length of 3,1 Km – Average slope of 5,8% - Drop of 176 m；
- Garate of 3rd category at Km 96.3 : Length of 1,5 Km – Average slope of 6,2% - Drop of 94 m；
- Sprint in Undurraga at Km 118.6；
- Bikoitz Gane of 1st category at Km 126.8 : Length of 4,9 Km – Average slope of 8,6% - Drop of 420 m；
- Sprint in Orozko at Km 136.1；
- Zaratamo of 3rd category at Km 161.3 : Length of 4 Km – Average slope of 3,2% - Drop of 129 m. 】

【 The cat 1 climb is really tough, 4.7km at 8.5%, but crests with 38km remaining.
As we approach the finish, we have two little bumps : 1.1km at 7.2% and 1km at 7.3%.
The final climb crests with just 3.6km remaining, making it perfect for a late attack.
The GC riders will have to be very watchful.

On paper, this stage doesn’t look too bad, but the cat 1 climb coming with 40km to go is really difficult. This hill will seriously slim down the bunch, before another kick-up very close to the finishing line. The end of this race won’t be easy to control. 】

--- Breakaway Hopes ：
If you’re not a great climber, this is the last stage you can possibly win.
We have some big gaps on the GC, which will allow freedom for some riders.
The problem is Astana, they seem keen on controlling stages and looking to hurt everyone else. Although, do they look at this finish and think they can win?

＊ Climb ( 1 級坡 )
4.3 km at 9.6 % is going to blow this race apart.
It’s likely we’ll see Astana hit it hard, trying to drop as many domestiques as they can.
One issue is that it does crest with 39km remaining, meaning it’s unlikely we’ll see the winning move go here.

＊ final 7 km
The final 7 km presents many opportunities for the attacking riders.
The first climb is 1220 m at 6.9 %. A steep descent follows for 860 m, before the road kicks up for 1000 m at 7.6 %.
With just 3 km left in the stage, this is a wonderful opportunity for someone to attack and take a solo win, particularly as the descent is fast and quite technical.

The wind is coming from the north-west, meaning a lot of headwind for everyone to contend with.

--- 這一站主要是防守方 BORA - hansgrohe 與攻擊方 Astana Pro Team、Mitchelton-Scott

之間的團體戰。BORA - hansgrohe 的防守非常成功，

Schachmann 也在終點前跟上了 Adam Yates 的強力攻擊，

拿下單站第 1 名的 10 秒獎勵，在第五站、第六站二個高山站之前，多積一些存糧。

( 終點前約 6 公里，積極在集團前方帶領的 Astana 車手 - Alexey Lutsenko 在一個彎道

因為下雨天路面濕滑而滑倒，跟在他後面的隊友 Pello Bilbao 也遭殃， Astana 在終點前的

關鍵時刻一下減損了二名重要戰力，老天又幫了 BORA - hansgrohe 一把。 )

--- 後面剩下的二個高山站，GC 1 的攻防還有好戲可看，

尤其是擅長高山作戰的 Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott)，從第四站可以看出他的狀況不錯，

也有強烈的企圖心 (不甘心)，雖然第四站後在 GC 榜上只名列第 13 名 (+ 1 分 52 秒)，

但是後勢可期。
